Introduction
“Sukuna” . This character has gone down as one of the scariest in anime history. Not because it looks extremely dangerous or has immense powers. Of course, it’s a powerful character, but what truly makes it terrifying is its ruthlessness. I can never forget the scene when Sukuna calmly pulled Itadori’s heart out and threw it away. Sukuna is so complex and interesting because he doesn’t side with enemies or jujutsu Sorcerer, those who protect the world from evil. He’s truly the king of curses. He does whatever comes to his mind. However, before being the king of curses, Sukuna used to be a normal human.
Sukuna’s Human Origin: From Sorcerer to Curse:
About 1000 years ago, Sukuna was a normal human or, more accurately, a normal jujutsu sorcerer. In his time, he quickly became the most powerful in the world. But, his personality was extremely sadistic and wild. He didn’t just eliminate cursed spirits but didn’t hesitate to kill humans either. Throughout his human life, he committed countless murders, but a point came when his human life ended. How exactly he died is unknown to anyone.
People guess that Sukuna might have a sad backstory that will be revealed later. Some say he was killed deceitfully. Whatever the cause of his death, one thing is certain: he truly never died. His wild nature and extraordinary negative energy reincarnated him as the king of curses. After reincarnation, Sukuna caused havoc; it was nearly impossible to kill him. I should mention that Sukuna has four arms and two heads, doubling his strength. That’s why all the sorcerers and sorceresses combined their powers to confine Sukuna’s power into his 20 fingers and safely hid each finger somewhere.
Sukuna’s revive into world of living
A thousand years later, Yuji Itadori consumed Sukuna’s finger, bringing the King of Curses back to Earth again. From the first episode, it was evident that Sukuna was going to be an OP character, and even with just one finger, Sukuna gave Gojo Satoru a tough fight. The fight scene was so smooth that I instantly became a fan of Jujutsu Kaisen. Even though Sukuna didn’t win, we got to see a small glimpse of his powers.
“Sukuna is on a completely different level. Even with just one finger, he’s more powerful than most curses I’ve ever faced.
– Gojo Satoru
Yuji Itadori’s Encounter with Sukuna
Sukuna’s second-best moment came when Yuji and Megumi went to exorcise a seemingly normal cursed spirit, but upon arrival, they discovered that this cursed spirit had consumed one of Sukuna’s fingers and had become very strong. It nearly killed Yuji, but at the right moment, Sukuna switched and completely obliterated that special grade cursed spirit. Sukuna didn’t care whether the body he inhabited survived or not. As I mentioned, after killing the cursed spirit, Sukuna immediately ripped out Yuji’s heart and started beating Megumi badly. I seriously thought it was the end for Yuji and Megumi, but Sukuna shocked everyone by not killing Megumi and even reviving Yuji.
The Deal with Yuji: One Minute of Control
Imagine how easy it is for Sukuna to die and come back to life. I should tell you that very few special grade cursed spirits have such revival powers. But Sukuna wasn’t going to revive Yuji so easily. After dying, Yuji went directly to Sukuna’s domain, where the king of curses himself was waiting. To revive Yuji, Sukuna made a deal with him that allowed Sukuna to control his body for one minute anytime he wanted. If Yuji wanted to be revived without making any deal, he had to defeat Sukuna. This was obviously Sukuna’s trick, and he defeated Yuji in one go.
Not only that, but Sukuna also bound Yuji to a binding vow and took away his memory. Yuji didn’t even know that Sukuna could control his body for 1 minute whenever he wanted. We have yet to see how much destruction he will cause in that one minute. But Yuji wasn’t the only one Sukuna defeated in one hit. There was another terrifying special grade curse named Mahito, whose special power was to control anyone’s soul by touching them and transform them into a cursed spirit.
He can also shape-shift his own body. But everything was fine until Mahito fought Yuji. As soon as he touched Yuji and tried to turn him into a cursed spirit, he went directly to Sukuna’s dimension. Remember, Mahito touched Sukuna’s domain along with Yuji’s soul, which Sukuna did not like at all. With a single strike, he finished Mahito. Although Mahito survived, the experience left him so scared that he had to go into hiding to recover his powers.
Currently, many things are yet to happen in the anime that have already occurred in the manga. Sukuna is trending everywhere right now. You might have already found out that Sukuna defeated Gojo Satoru badly, but that’s still a long way off. In the current Shibuya Arc in the anime, Sukuna causes the most destruction. I won’t spoil those moments for you; it’s better if you wait and see for yourself. Fans have accepted that Sukuna is the king of curses, but I often wonder how he became such a powerful curse. The definitive answer lies only with the manga writer, but I have some interesting theories I want to share with you.
“Sukuna’s power isn’t just in his strength, but in his absolute ruthlessness. He embodies the worst fears of every sorcerer.”
– Kento Nanami
Theories Behind Sukuna’s Power: The Curse of Death
First of all, cursed spirits form when a lot of negative energy gathers in one place. This allows the curse to take a physical form and start troubling people. You’ve probably heard of places called “light points” or “energy vortexes.” They exist in many places in the world, where people often feel negative energy due to the accumulation of negative emotions. This unnatural concept is what creates cursed spirits.
In my opinion, Sukuna is different and powerful because he is directly the curse of death. Every living being in this world is afraid of dying. Our basic fear is that we might die. Sukuna has harnessed this fear and gathered immense powers. Even the writers of Jujutsu Kaisen have mentioned that Sukuna can be seen as a natural disaster, which doesn’t even know how much destruction it can cause. This unpredictability is what makes him so powerful.
You might have noticed that his domain expansion is called Malevolent Shrine. It’s a throne surrounded by many bones. In Japanese, “malevolent” means wishing death upon others, and I think this title fits Sukuna perfectly. However, Sukuna must have a tragic backstory that the writers are keeping hidden from all the fans. I am sure that the day that chapter is released, the entire internet will be filled with Jujutsu Kaisen discussions.
