Introduction
Well, we all might have wondered at some point what would happen if Itachi Uchiha got the Rinnegan or managed to activate it. Many people might say that it’s impossible for Itachi to activate the Rinnegan. But before you let your imagination run wild, let me tell you that there are two possibilities through which Itachi could naturally activate his Rinnegan or acquire it from someone else.
The Path to Activating the Rinnegan
To naturally activate the Rinnegan, Itachi would first need to become a power-hungry person like Madara and Obito. This would require him to take his father’s Mangekyo Sharingan to activate his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. We all know that the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan boosts power, abilities, and chakra reserves. Well, it doesn’t boost chakra reserves, but it optimizes and stabilizes them. However, the biggest issue is Itachi’s illness, which was never properly explained in the series. If you have any idea about his illness, please let me know in the comments.
Because of his illness, Itachi never used his Mangekyo Sharingan to its full potential, except once in the fight with Sasuke. After that, he died. As we know, the Rinnegan is a chakra-hungry dōjutsu. To solve this problem, Itachi would need to go to Orochimaru to have Hashirama cells transplanted into himself, as this could only be done by Orochimaru at that time. Orochimaru had performed this procedure in the past, and we saw that when Madara implanted Hashirama cells into his body, even his injuries healed.
As we all know, the Rinnegan can only be activated by someone with Ōtsutsuki clan chakra. Many people might argue that only Indra’s reincarnations can activate the Rinnegan, like Madara and Sasuke did, but this was never explicitly stated in the series. Therefore, we can assume that someone with both Uchiha and Senju DNA can activate the Rinnegan.
Overcoming Illness: The Role of Hashirama Cells
After implanting Hashirama cells, Itachi would need to wait a long time to activate the Rinnegan, as it was activated in Madara’s final moments. However, we can consider an exception here: Itachi, being a genius, could activate it in two to three years. The biggest problem would still be his illness. But don’t worry, because Hashirama cells come into play here. Hashirama had self-healing abilities that would help Itachi manage his illness, allowing him to use the Rinnegan without any problems and increase his chakra reserves. He might even be able to use Wood Release.
So these are the two major reasons why Itachi would implant Hashirama cells in himself. After activating the Rinnegan, Itachi’s power would become godly. When he activated his Mangekyo Sharingan, he was called the god of genjutsu after Shisui, so you can imagine how powerful he would become after activating the Rinnegan. Using these powers, he would annihilate the Akatsuki to maintain peace in the world and protect his village from any threat. Yes, it would be difficult for Itachi to defeat Pain and Obito, but with the power Itachi would have, they wouldn’t stand a chance. And the Fourth Great Ninja War might never happen. As for Black Zetsu, Itachi would find a way to deal with him too.
Now, here’s a funny thing: even though Itachi would become immensely powerful and possess the Rinnegan, he might still be killed by Sasuke—maybe not during the Great Ninja War, but in the future. Until then, Itachi would live his life without illness, protecting his village from the shadows. He was never a bad person, and perhaps with his power, he could even bring his dead clan members back to life. However, this wouldn’t be easy because a long time has passed since the massacre, and their soul might not be in the Soul World anymore.
“Itachi was a prodigy unlike any other. His skills and intellect were unmatched.”
– Kakashi Hatake
Itachi vs. Obito and Pain
So, this is the first scenario where Itachi naturally activates his Rinnegan. In the second scenario, there wouldn’t be much difference because he would still need to defeat Pain, which requires power and curing his illness. To cure his illness, he would implant Hashirama cells in himself, and he would also need the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, which he would get by implanting his father’s Mangekyo Sharingan.
After that, he would fight and defeat Pain. Once Pain is defeated, Itachi would take the Rinnegan, as we saw in Naruto that anyone can use another’s dōjutsu. However, upon taking Pain’s Rinnegan, he might have to fight Obito, since Obito was the mastermind. Defeating Obito would be difficult because he is more powerful than Pain. However, I think Itachi might win using his intelligence. It’s just my theory, but he might win, as defeating Obito is not easy.
After finally taking the Rinnegan, he could implant it in himself. Then, the story would proceed similarly, except Madara and Kaguya would not be revived. Itachi might take a break after this. He might be able to do something during the Ōtsutsuki invasion if he survives, but eventually, Sasuke will defeat him.
The Drawbacks of Itachi Activating the Rinnegan
If Itachi activates the Rinnegan, the biggest drawback will be that there would be no alliance between the Five Nations throughout the series. They would remain enemies, and Naruto’s future would not be the same. He might not become Hokage, and even if he does, he wouldn’t be as powerful as he is now because he wouldn’t have a bond with Kurama
“Itachi was always calm, always composed. He saw through everything with those eyes of his.”
– Kisame Hoshigaki
