Origins of the Rasengan
The Rasengan is a spinning ball made from chakra that the user forms on their hand. Only a select few shinobi know how to use this jutsu. The Rasengan we know was created by Minato Namikaze after witnessing the Tailed Beast Bomb. It took him three years to develop it, as it represents the highest form of chakra shape transformation. Mastering the Rasengan also means mastering shape transformation, even if the user knows nothing about the concept beforehand.
Unlike many of Minato’s other jutsu, the Rasengan does not require hand seals to perform. Once created, the Rasengan doesn’t need any extra chakra to maintain, allowing it to stay active indefinitely. However, the Rasengan explodes upon impact with anything, whether it’s the target or not. The shape of the Rasengan is consistent, but its size varies depending on the user’s experience. A more experienced user can increase the size of the Rasengan and create it with both hands. Jiraiya once mentioned that the Rasengan is stronger than the Chidori.
When in contact, the Rasengan propels its target along its trajectory, either away from the user or into the ground, and then bursts, causing significant injury to the target. Learning the Rasengan requires very fine chakra control, which is naturally possessed by very few ninjas, making it difficult to master.
Mastering the Rasengan
The jutsu is divided into three steps for teaching others:
Rotation: The user learns to rotate their chakra in multiple directions using a water balloon to visually monitor progress. This step is complete when the user can burst the balloon with their chakra. It is essential for the user to understand the natural direction in which their body spins the chakra.
Power: In this step, the user has to increase their chakra output and density. A rubber balloon, filled only with air, replaces the water balloon. The step is complete when the rubber balloon is popped.
Containment: In this step, the user combines the first two steps to create an exploding ball, using another balloon. The step is incomplete if the balloon pops prematurely.
Completing the final step is particularly challenging. Both Naruto and Konohamaru use shadow clones to help create the Rasengan, a shortcut to mastering chakra without spending too much time on it. Eventually, both manage to create the Rasengan without clones. Naruto learns to throw the Rasengan without a shadow clone during the Fourth Shinobi World War, and Konohamaru learns to do so several years after the war’s end.
Initially, the Rasengan could not be thrown, but the user can use it as a projectile after fully understanding the jutsu.
“I created the Rasengan to embody the highest form of shape transformation. It’s a technique that requires not just strength, but finesse and mastery over one’s chakra.”
– Minato Namikaze
Evolution of the Rasengan
There are two ways to enhance the Rasengan’s attack potential:
Enlarging the Rasengan, like the Big Ball Rasengan. Using multiple Rasengan simultaneously, like the Spiraling Serial Spheres. After absorbing Konohamaru’s Rasengan, Momoshiki combines it with his own chakra to increase its size. Minato intended to combine the Rasengan with his chakra nature, but this proved too difficult, although he died prematurely.Kakashi Hatake was unsuccessful in combining his chakra nature with the Rasengan. Instead, he combined his lightning nature with his Chidori.
Naruto initially struggles to combine the Rasengan with his wind nature, explaining that it is like trying to look left and right at the same time, which is impossible. Eventually, he overcomes this by using shadow clones, which help to create the Rasengan and perform nature transformation. With this technique, he creates the Wind Release: Rasengan, and after incorporating shape transformation, he creates the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken.
Boruto Uzumaki unknowingly adds his lightning chakra to the Rasengan, allowing him to throw it at targets. This unique combination makes his Rasengan vanish mid-air, making it difficult for opponents to anticipate or counter. Additionally, Boruto combines his wind nature with his chakra to create another variant of the Rasengan, enhancing its range and speed.
Rasengan in Sage Mode
Sage Mode enhances the Rasengan further, making it stronger and deadlier. With Sage Mode, Naruto can create the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan in less time. He usually throws the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken in Sage Mode, as using it normally causes it to lose its shape.
Being a Jinchuriki, Naruto can also use Kurama’s chakra. In the One-Tail version, he creates the Rasengan without using Shadow Clones. This version is covered by the Kurama Cloak, and due to the influence of the Nine-Tails, the Rasengan becomes darker in color and deadlier. In many video games, it has different names such as Demon Fox Rasengan, Vermilion Rasengan, and Crimson Rasengan.
“The Rasengan is a symbol of my determination. It represents the bond I share with those who taught me and those I wish to protect.”
– Naruto Uzumaki
Rasengan and Jinchuriki Powers
After achieving One-Tail Mode, Naruto uses chakra arms instead of Shadow Clones to create the Rasengan. Because he can create multiple chakra arms simultaneously, he can use multiple Rasengans at once, such as the Flying Strike Spears. Initially, the Nine-Tails is not cooperative when Naruto learns the Nine-Tails Mode, making it difficult for him to create the Tailed Beast Ball. He tries to create an alternative, the Tailed Beast Rasengan, but he fails. However, when he learns to cooperate with Kurama, he finally succeeds in creating the Tailed Beast Ball.
Naruto also gains the chakra of other Tailed Beasts, and with their chakra, he creates different variants of the Rasengan, such as the Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan.
