Introduction
We all know Nanami is gone, just as we feared. Since we’ve all grown to love the character, let me give you a brief rundown of Nanami’s entire life journey one last time, and we’ll also discuss his powers here.
Early Life and Jujutsu High
Nanami was born in July 1990 in Japan. In 2006, he joined Jujutsu High, where his classmate was Yu Haibara. Nanami and Haibara were very close, and at that time, the second-year students included Geto, Gojo, and the rest of the crew.
The Okinawa Mission
Nanami’s first mission, where we actually saw him in action, was the Okinawa mission—yes, the same mission where Gojo and Geto had to protect the Star Plasma Vessel and safely bring her to Master Tengen. Nanami and Haibara’s job was to guard the airport and scout the area to ensure everything was safe. During that mission, as we all know, they stayed an extra day, which Nanami was absolutely not happy about. In general, we always see Nanami in a serious mood. As for what happened with the Star Plasma Vessel during that mission, we all know how that story unfolded.
A Tragic Turning Point
About a year after that incident, Nanami and Haibara were sent to exorcise a cursed spirit. At that time, they were both Grade 2 sorcerers, and the cursed spirit that was reported was also classified as Grade 2. Normally, the two of them would have easily exorcised that cursed spirit together, but it turned out to be much more powerful—perhaps even a Grade 1. Consequently, the mission became extremely difficult, and Haibara tragically lost his life.
This incident was a major turning point in Nanami’s life because he was very close to Haibara, and seeing someone so dear die right in front of his eyes broke something inside Nanami. He began to believe that Jujutsu Sorcerers risk their lives for nothing just to save ordinary humans, and what do they get in return? Nothing.
In fact, ordinary humans don’t even know that Jujutsu Sorcerers exist. According to Nanami, it just wasn’t worth it. He thought life shouldn’t be hanging by such a thin thread, so he bid farewell to Jujutsu and settled into a corporate job.
“Nanami Kento… even when I touched his soul, I could feel his resolve. A man who knew his limits and still chose to push beyond them. Truly annoying.”
– Mahito
Disillusionment with the Jujutsu World
At this point, Nanami’s mindset was such that he started hating Jujutsu Sorcerers. I mean, Jujutsu Sorcerers always talk about sacrificing themselves, and Nanami couldn’t agree with that anymore. He even mentioned that he didn’t respect Gojo because, in his view, every Jujutsu Sorcerer had to be a bit crazy to do their job. But Nanami did make it clear that he trusted Gojo 100%, he just didn’t respect his work.
Behind Nanami’s negative thoughts was a deep, dark secret: deep down, he regretted that he couldn’t save his friend Haibara. If you look at Nanami’s personality, it’s quite negative, while Haibara’s personality was very optimistic and positive. They balanced each other out, but with Haibara gone, Nanami fell into a deep hole.
Corporate Life and Realization
Nanami’s corporate life began, where he felt extreme boredom in his job. He was a hard worker, no doubt about it, but over the years, he started feeling that the people in his job never actually appreciated his work. Moreover, the work he did had no tangible impact—not on the world, and not even on a single person’s life.
Now, Nanami loves bread, and he is a foodie. I’m mentioning this because one time, when he visited a bakery lady’s shop, he noticed a cursed spirit sitting on her shoulder. The lady, being a human, couldn’t see it and didn’t understand what was bothering her. Usually, Nanami would ignore cursed spirits in such situations, but this time, he felt compelled to exorcise the cursed spirit to relieve the lady from her distress. So, Nanami exorcised the cursed spirit, after which the lady felt much lighter and thanked him profusely.
At this point, Nanami realized that even though the work of a Jujutsu Sorcerer isn’t appreciated by people, the impact of their work on people’s lives is real. This realization is what made Nanami rejoin the Jujutsu world. By this time, Nanami had become a Grade 1 sorcerer, and who better than Nanami to show us just how powerful a Grade 1 sorcerer can be?
Return to Jujutsu Sorcery and Mentorship
Before Itadori’s arrival, do you remember the Night Parade of 100 Demons in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where Nanami fought several cursed spirits? During that battle, Nanami landed four consecutive Black Flashes, which is a kind of record. When Itadori enrolled at Jujutsu High, Gojo essentially made Nanami his mentor. So, Itadori and Nanami went on their first mission together, where they encountered transfigured humans. And of course, this was Mahito’s doing, a Special Grade cursed spirit.
The Mahito Confrontation
Here, Mahito faced Nanami and Yuji Itadori. Surprisingly, even Mahito, who is a Special Grade cursed spirit, was shocked by Nanami’s power. Mahito literally attacked Nanami’s soul, but Nanami survived that attack. In fact, Nanami even withstood Mahito’s domain. Yes, I know Itadori broke in from outside and did a lot in that fight, but still, Mahito was very impressed by Nanami’s strength. This Mahito-Nanami fight was quite OP, and we see that in the end, Nanami and Yuji together brought down Mahito.
The Shibuya Incident: Nanami’s Final Battle
Do I even need to mention how thoroughly Nanami thrashed Haruta during the Shibuya incident? He tied his hand with a tie, and if Haruta didn’t have his miraculous cursed technique, he wouldn’t have survived even a single punch from Nanami. During all this, Nobara was also there, and she even commented that this is what the true power of a Grade 1 sorcerer looks like, as Nanami was showcasing it.
After this, Nanami teamed up with Naobito Zenin and Maki Zenin to fight Dagon. Nanami even withstood Dagon’s domain. Yes, it’s a different story that when Toji entered the scene, things took a different turn. Toji beat Dagon quite thoroughly. When Toji makes an entry, everyone else fades into the background.
After escaping from the domain, Jogo, another Special Grade cursed spirit, burned Nanami half to death. Even in this burned condition, Nanami single-handedly fought off several transfigured humans in Shibuya. Here, it becomes clear to us what Nanami wanted from life: a house on a beach in Malaysia where he could live peacefully, away from the hustle and bustle of life. Nanami was tired of this chaotic existence. At this point, Mahito returned, and this time, he touched Nanami. And mind you, Mahito had become much more powerful by now.
Nanami’s Last Moments
Before dying, Nanami sees his best friend Haibara and then looks at Yuji Itadori, smiles, and says, ‘I’m leaving everything to you from here on, my friend.’ In the next moment, Mahito transfigures and rips Nanami apart, marking Nanami’s death in Shibuya. Friends, this was a brief history of Nanami’s life.
Nanami’s Powers and Techniques
Now we’ll talk a bit about his powers and cursed techniques. Nanami had an incredible level of control over his cursed energy. He used his cursed energy to become immensely powerful. Remember when Haruta kicked Nanami and tried to stab him? Haruta literally said it felt like he was hitting a stone wall, and nothing was happening. In fact, Nanami didn’t even get a scratch from Haruta’s attack; that’s how strong he was.
The Overtime Technique
Nanami’s control over his cursed energy reached the next level when he created a binding vow, meaning that at a particular time, his cursed energy would be limited, and then afterward, it would increase. Didn’t catch what I’m saying? Well, you’ve heard of Nanami’s Overtime technique, right? And you’ve also heard of Revealing One Hand? Let’s understand these two techniques.
So, Overtime is a kind of binding vow that Nanami has made with himself. Under this vow, his cursed energy remains limited as long as he is working within his official hours for Jujutsu High. But as soon as he works beyond his normal shift, meaning during Overtime, his cursed energy increases dramatically. If we quantify it, you could say Nanami normally operates at around 80-90% of his cursed energy, but during Overtime, he can go up to 120%.
Nanami can break this binding vow at any time, allowing him to work at 100% even during normal hours. However, the problem is that if Nanami goes into Overtime after breaking the vow, his cursed energy will only increase by 1%, which is almost negligible.
So now, did you understand how Overtime works? If you did, write in the comments, ‘Yes, I got it, bro.’
Revealing One’s Hand Technique
Now, coming to Revealing One’s Hand: In this technique, whenever Nanami explains to his opponent how his cursed technique works, his cursed technique becomes even more effective. Many Jujutsu Sorcerers use this Revealing One’s Hand technique; we’ve seen it in the anime as well. But who used it? You tell me in the comments—I won’t say. It’s a test.
The Ratio Technique
Now that we’re talking about techniques, let’s discuss Nanami’s innate technique, Ratio. With Ratio, Nanami can see 10 lines on his target, divided into a 7:3 ratio. So, what happens then? Well, the ratio point of 7:3 becomes the weak point of the target. By attacking this weak point in a specific pattern, Nanami can potentially one-shot his target. Obviously, this depends on how strong his opponent is, but generally speaking, he can one-shot even a Grade 1 opponent.
Now, it’s not necessary for the Ratio technique to be applied to the entire target—no, no. If Nanami applies it to just one hand, the hand will also be divided into 10 parts, with a weak point at the 7:3 mark. By attacking this weak point, he can render the hand useless. In other words, the Ratio technique works on specific body parts as well. In fact, the Ratio technique is so versatile that it even works on non-living things. For example, if there’s a table in front of you, Nanami can cut it into 10 parts, hit the weak point at 7:3, and the table will break.
The Collapse Extension
An extension of this technique is Collapse. What’s Collapse? Well, Nanami can one-shot his surroundings. We saw an example of this when Nanami encountered Mahito in the underground tunnel. He used Collapse on the surroundings, causing everything to collapse, trapping Mahito in the debris. Remember that? It happened in season one. So yes, that’s how Collapse works.
The Unique Sword and Combat Style
Nanami’s sword, it’s very unique, wrapped in black and white cloth with black dots on it, resembling patches. The sword is wrapped in cloth like this because Nanami’s sword is actually blunt. But with this blunt, short sword, he can one-shot many opponents, thanks to his Ratio technique.
If you look closely at Nanami’s tie, it has a pattern somewhat similar to the cloth on his sword. The only difference is that the tie is yellow—at least, I think so; I’m not very good with colors. What I am good at is understanding how Nanami uses his tie. He literally wraps it around his hand and then punches his opponent straight in the face, thrashing them. Remember how he beat Haruta? .
“Nanami is a man who doesn’t let his emotions dictate his actions. He’s someone who knows what it means to be a true Jujutsu Sorcerer. I trust him completely.”
– Gojo Satoru
Conclusion: The Legacy of Nanami
Nanami was really strong. Overall, we can say that Nanami was an extremely powerful Jujutsu Sorcerer. We’re just used to seeing Gojo and Sukuna, so we think everyone else is weak. But if you remove the Special Grades and talk about Grade 1s, Nanami is the true definition of Grade 1. That’s how powerful he was.
And then there are his analytical skills—his mind is sharp, he’s always serious, and he looks stylish. So guys, #RespectForNanami. Write it in the comments and spam it. There should be at least a thousand comments saying #RespectForNanami.
That’s all for today’s blog. I hope I’ve given you all the information related to Nanami. But if I missed something, the comment section is open. If you liked the blog, do like and share it. I’ll see you guys in the next one. Sayonara…
