Origins of the Otsutsuki Clan
The Otsutsuki Clan is an ancient clan of horned celestial beings, also known as aliens. As a parasitic species, they have traveled through the cosmos for thousands of years. To carry out their will, the clan members consume life energy and genetic material from other worlds, allowing them to continuously evolve and become god-like.
Thousands of years ago, after Kaguya’s arrival on Earth, the Otsutsuki began to influence the human race, especially with the beginning of shinobi history. Welcome to AniBuddyBlog.
I am Azmain Shakhor, and today we will talk about the history of the Otsutsuki clan. Now, let’s start the blog on their history.
The God Tree and Chakra Fruits
For many eras, the Otsutsuki clan has traveled through dimensions to plant God Trees in other worlds. Once planted, the tree grows into a God Tree, whose roots spread and absorb chakra and genetic material from its surroundings and inhabitants, causing everything to die and forming a large fruit.
They consume this fruit to gain powers. To transform the Ten Tails seed into a God Tree, a living Otsutsuki must be sacrificed. Therefore, they travel in pairs, sacrificing the weaker one while the survivor oversees the cultivation of the fruit. When a member of the Otsutsuki clan is sacrificed, they use their Karma to create a vessel in order to revive themselves.
Kaguya and Isshiki: Betrayal and the Battle for Earth
Thousands of years ago, Kaguya and Isshiki were chosen to cultivate the God Tree on Earth and harvest the chakra fruit. In this, Kaguya was supposed to be sacrificed for the Ten-Tails to grow, but Kaguya wanted to obtain the chakra fruit for herself. She deceived Isshiki and left him to die.
To save himself, Isshiki shrank his body and entered the body of a monk named Jigen, gradually taking control over him. Meanwhile, Kaguya grew attached to Earth and even fell in love with a human. After consuming the chakra fruit, Kaguya gained immense power and used it to end the endless conflicts among humans by casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a powerful genjutsu that trapped everyone in a dream-like state, creating an illusion of world peace. This act made her worshipped as a goddess by the people.
Despite the peace she brought, Kaguya knew that the Otsutsuki clan would come after her for the chakra she had obtained. To prepare for this inevitable conflict, she began transforming those trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi into a White Zetsu army, soldiers loyal to her. This act, however, caused humans to see her as a demon rather than a savior. In the eyes of the Otsutsuki clan, Kaguya’s actions were seen as a betrayal. She had defied their mission and kept the chakra fruit for herself.
“We are the Otsutsuki, the original wielders of chakra. Everything in this world stems from us.”
– Kaguya Otsutsuki
The Birth of Shinobi: From Hagoromo to Modern Clans
Over time, Kaguya gave birth to twins, Hagoromo and Hamura, who inherited her chakra. As they grew, Kaguya’s desire to control all chakra became stronger because she was afraid the Otsutsuki clan would come after her and she was worried about losing her power. This made her turn against her sons, trying to take their chakra to make herself even stronger.
To obtain their chakra, Kaguya merged with the Earth’s God Tree, becoming the Ten Tails and causing massive destruction. Finally, Hagoromo and Hamura sealed her with the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei, which eventually became the moon. Hagoromo sealed the Ten Tails’ chakra within himself becoming its jinchūriki and hide its body, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, on the moon .His separation of the Ten-Tails’ chakra and body ensured that it would be exceedingly difficult for anyone to bring the Ten-Tails back to life.
But, before being sealed, Kaguya created a physical manifestation of her will, Black Zetsu, to ensure her revival.
Hagoromo handed over the clan’s leadership to Hamura so that they could stand guard over the Demonic Statue. Hagoromo and Hamura’s direct bloodlines remained on Earth, inheriting the Byakugan and becoming the Hyuga clan, while Hamura’s descendants settled on the moon. Believing that chakra connected everything in the world, Hagoromo traveled the world spreading this knowledge.
Near the end of his life, Hagoromo divided the Ten-Tails’ chakra into nine tailed beasts to prevent Kaguya and the Ten-Tails’ revival. Before dying, Hagoromo tasked his younger son, Asura, with continuing his mission of peace. However, Black Zetsu manipulated Hagoromo’s older son, Indra, against his younger brother, Asura, causing the fight between the two brothers to continue through their descendants via reincarnation.
Monitoring Earth during his remaining years, Hamura entrusted his clan with this responsibility before dying. His descendants on the moon revered his Tenseigan as a sacred treasure, preserving it as a religious object. To maintain the vessel’s power, they took Byakugan from newborn members. Over thousands of years, a branch family on the moon misinterpreted Hamura’s will and began to believe that he wanted his descendants to destroy the world created by Hagoromo. This led to conflicts within the family, and the branch family weaponized the Tenseigan, completely eradicating the main family.
On the other hand, the descendants of the Otsutsuki clan, such as the Senju, Uzumaki, and Uchiha clans, used Indra’s invention of ninjutsu to create the shinobi world. A thousand years after defeating the Ten Tails, Toneri is the sole survivor of the Moon’s branch family who knows that the demonic statue was stolen.
The Reawakening: Kaguya’s Return
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Ten Tails were revived, and Kaguya was brought back for a brief period, but she was sealed along with Black Zetsu by the reincarnations of Indra and Ashura in her dimension.
Two years later, Toneri, a member of the Otsutsuki clan, began to believe that the shinobi world on Earth would destroy peace and order. He saw the world created by Hagoromo as a failure and deviated from the path told by Hamura. Unable to reach an understanding with the Hyuga clan, Toneri kidnaps the heir of the Hyuga clan and takes their Byakugan to activate the Tenseigan.
Upon learning about this, Konoha sends a team to the Moon, who defeats him. After understanding Hamura’s true intentions, Toneri promises to become the sole guardian of Earth.
Isshiki’s Plan and the Rise of Kara: A New Era of Conflict
Years later, during the era of the Seventh Hokage, Momoshiki and Kinshiki learn about abnormalities in Kaguya’s world and come to investigate on behalf of their clan. The main family sends them, along with Urashiki, to learn more about Kaguya. Although they are unaware of Kaguya and her chakra, they uncover the Byakugan Princess incident on the Moon through Urashiki’s efforts. They consider Kaguya a traitor and a disgrace for developing an attachment to Earth and raising weapons against them.
After defeating Momoshiki and Kinshiki, Konoha’s investigation reveals information about four separate Otsutsuki clans.
Some time later, Konoha learns about the Otsutsuki clan’s time travel machine used by Urashiki Otsutsuki to acquire the Nine Tails chakra from the past. However, he fails in his mission. During this time, Jigen, who is actually the vessel for Isshiki Otsutsuki, obtains a juvenile Ten Tails and plans to create another God Tree with the help of the organization known as Kara. Originally, Isshiki plans to use the Ten Tails to grow a God Tree, from which he intends to harvest a chakra fruit and consume it to gain immense power and fulfill the Otsutsuki clan’s goals.
After being betrayed by Kaguya, Isshiki had no other option left. Due to his fatal injury, the chakra fruit would be of low quality, so he created Kawaki as his vessel for his resurrection.
Due to the time limit on Isshiki’s current vessel’s degradation and the incomplete extraction of his Karma in Kawaki, Kara’s plans were on a tight schedule. However, they get a slight relief when Momoshiki creates a vessel for himself before dying, Boruto Uzumaki. Realizing this, Isshiki changes his plans and decides to use Boruto as a sacrifice for the Ten Tails, which would help create a powerful God Tree and chakra fruit.
Isshiki’s plans fail when his subordinates, Amado and Koji, betray him, and Kawaki frees himself, resulting in Isshiki’s death. Momoshiki considers Isshiki’s death beneficial for himself. Even though Kawaki lost his Karma, 80% of his biological data had not yet been extracted, making Momoshiki consider him a full Otsutsuki and a valuable sacrifice for the Ten Tails.
But before that, Boruto gains control over himself and stops Momoshiki from taking Kawaki to the Ten Tails. Immediately after this, Isshiki’s soul appears before his loyal but failed vessel, Code. Isshiki instructs Code to continue the Otsutsuki will by transforming into an Otsutsuki using White Karma and advancing their plan. Code agrees but decides to avenge his master’s killer before doing so.
Legacy of the Otsutsuki: Abilities, Resurrection, and Rebirth
Amado reveals that the Otsutsuki are an alien race that evolves by consuming the energy and genetic information from the chakra fruit, which serves as nutrients for the God Tree, granting them god-like powers. After consuming the chakra fruit, some Otsutsuki can absorb chakra to a certain extent or transform by consuming specific forms of power, such as jutsu.
Momoshiki explains that using chakra is their great skill, originally meant only for them, but Hagoromo taught it to humans with the help of Ninshu. With its help, they can fight and even seal their presence. As seen in the Fourth Shinobi World War, even those with the Ten Tails Jinchūriki, including Kaguya, are weaker compared to the shinobi’s skills. Ultimately, Kaguya is defeated by Hagoromo’s Six Paths Chakra and sealed.
The Otsutsuki can survive even after death, as seen with Hagoromo, whose soul lived on through his chakra to continue solving issues even after his death. Hamura’s soul also appeared before Hinata Hyuga, granting her powers to stop Toneri. Indra and Asura’s chakra reincarnates repeatedly in their descendants, continuing their conflict. Momoshiki’s spirit remains for a while after his body’s destruction, allowing him to speak his final words to Boruto.
The Otsutsuki can resurrect by transferring their genetic profile into a vessel through Karma, which grants the individual unique abilities and skills of the Otsutsuki. The primary function of Karma is to overwrite the host’s body with the Otsutsuki’s genetic data, transforming the vessel into an Otsutsuki who can manifest their will. Eventually, all data merges with the host’s body, erasing the host’s personality and reviving the Otsutsuki in a new body while retaining the host’s memories, knowledge, and skills.
Not everyone is a perfect vessel for becoming an Otsutsuki. Incompatible candidates can’t handle the powers of the Otsutsuki properly and die shortly after revival. If a candidate fails as a vessel, they receive White Karma, which grants them pure Otsutsuki powers without the ability to revive. These candidates can become Otsutsuki by consuming a chakra fruit.
The Otsutsuki have a natural skill, the Byakugan, which can evolve into the Tenseigan. Kaguya had the ability of Shikotsumyaku, while Urashiki and Momoshiki had the Rinnegan. Another skill shown in the anime is Wood Release, possessed by Asura. An Otsutsuki’s ability to travel through dimensions requires enormous energy. They inhabited the Moon by creating the Tenseigan, which they powered using the Byakugan.
The Tenseigan provided them with light and enabled them to create a habitable environment. It also allowed them to control the Moon’s movements and power their equipment. With the help of the Tenseigan, they controlled automatons that were more advanced than shinobi-made puppet techniques.
During Hagoromo and Hamura’s time, they used various seals to grant and restrict chakra, which were rediscovered after their deaths.
“The Otsutsuki clan is not just powerful—they’re ancient beings who see this world as a mere resource for their own gains.”
– Sasuke Uchiha
Appearance of the Otsutsuki Clan
Main family members had pale white skin, black, white, or lavender pupil eyes, pale blue or white hair, and eyebrows shaped in circular patterns to show nobility. They bore different kinds of horns on their foreheads. Their biology is quite similar to humans, allowing them to reproduce with humans, and even half-human hybrids have horns and share similar skin colors.
So, friends, that was the history of the Otsutsuki clan. If you like this blog, please like and share it. Goodbye!
