Introduction
Akatsuki is a group of rogue shinobi who did not follow the hidden village systems. The Akatsuki lasted for many years and had several leaders, each with the desire to make the shinobi world a better place, regardless of whether their methods were right or wrong. Akatsuki’s secret bases were spread across various nations.
Under Yahiko’s leadership:
The Akatsuki’s initial concept, created by Black Zetsu, was to bring his mother back to life. He tricked Madara Uchiha into believing that the idea was his own, and claimed that he is the physical manifestation of Madara Uchiha’s will.
Yahiko started Akatsuki during the Third Shinobi World War along with his childhood friends, Nagato and Konan. They all became orphans during the Second Shinobi World War. As other shinobi nations turned their village into a battle zone, they formed Akatsuki to bring peace to their village and end the war.
During this time, they met Tobi, who claimed to be Madara Uchiha. Tobi claimed that Nagato is the reincarnation of the Sage of Six Paths, could teach him to use the Rinnegan’s powers. Yahiko refused Tobi and told Nagato and Konan to stay away from him. Many Rain shinobi joined Akatsuki to end the war, and the group became famous in other shinobi nations..
Yahiko kept all members motivated to face any challenge and kept them united. Yahiko believed in Nagato that ultimately, Nagato would bring world peace with his Rinnegan.
Danzo Shimura manipulated Hanzo, the leader of the Rain Village, to go against Akatsuki. Hanzo offered to work with Akatsuki, but when Yahiko, Nagato and Konan came to meet him, Hanzo’s ninja and some Leaf ninja surrounded them. Hanzo took Konan hostage and ordered Nagato to kill Yahiko. Yahiko committed suicide in Nagato’s arms, which caused Nagato to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path in anger. Nagato saved Konan, but Hanzo escaped. Other members of Akatsuki came to help Yahiko and Nagato, but Tobi and his followers killed them before they could reach them.
Under Nagato’s leadership:
After Yahiko’s death, Nagato became the leader of Akatsuki. Nagato began to believe that the shinobi world would never agree to peace on their own, as they only sought power. He thought that only by experiencing the pain of losing their loved ones would people consider ending the war. To make everyone feel pain, Nagato created the Six Paths of Pain and made Yahiko’s body the leader to lead Akatsuki. Nagato met Tobi and accepted his offer, keeping it a secret from the rest of Akatsuki.
After the Third Shinobi World War, Akatsuki began recruiting rogue shinobi of S-rank to achieve their goals. Orochimaru and Itachi joined with their own intentions, while Kisame and Zetsu joined to complete the Moon’s Eye Plan. Akatsuki recruited a total of ten members to carry out their plans. The first plan was to earn money to support the organization. The second plan was to provide mercenary services to all nations at competitive rates, making all nations dependent on Akatsuki’s services and creating a monopoly. The third was to capture all the tailed beasts, making the process faster and easier to take over countries after weakening all the shinobi forces.
Nagato proved successful initially as many countries hired Akatsuki to fight their wars. The Fourth Raikage claimed that the Cloud Village had never hired Akatsuki, but the Third Tsuchikage had done so many times. Despite being successful and popular, Akatsuki remained mysterious to all sides. Some people thought Akatsuki started in the Hidden Mist Village.
Akatsuki faced trouble from its own members. Kakuzu often killed his partners to take their hearts for himself. Eventually, he was partnered with Hidan, who was immortal. Orochimaru tried to take Itachi’s body but failed and left Akatsuki. Despite these internal conflicts, they continued capturing the tailed beasts. Nagato’s goal was to capture all the tailed beasts, combine their chakra to create a powerful kinjutsu capable of destroying half the world, and scare the remaining half into stopping wars. If anyone started a war again, he would scare them into stopping once more.
Many of the tailed beasts possessed by the Hidden Villages opposed Akatsuki, causing Akatsuki’s clients to decrease. Gradually, the Hidden Villages became their enemies.
After capturing the One-Tail by Deidara, Sasori died fighting Chiyo and Sakura. Taking advantage of this open position, Obito officially joined Akatsuki as Tobi and started targeting the Three-Tails.
Kakuzu and Hidan captured the Two-Tails but were both killed while fighting Konoha forces. Kisame Hoshigaki captured the Four-Tails. After some time, Deidara and Itachi also died. Itachi died during his fight with Sasuke.
Due to having fewer members, Tobi instructed Nagato to capture other tailed beasts. Nagato and Konan captured the Six-Tails and then proceeded to capture the Nine-Tails in Konoha. In this process, Nagato destroyed Konoha. Finally, when he talked to Naruto, Nagato realized that bringing peace without shedding blood was more important. To correct his mistakes, Nagato decided to revive all the villagers who died due to his attack, sacrificing himself in the process. Before dying, he told Naruto to fulfill his dream. After the deaths of Nagato and Yahiko, Konan left Akatsuki.
“The Akatsuki is an organization that goes beyond just a collection of rogue shinobi. Each member is a monster in their own right, with goals that could shake the foundations of the world.
– Kakashi Hatake
Under Tobi’s leadership:
Tobi joined Akatsuki primarily because he needed Nagato’s Rinnegan to complete his Eye of the Moon Plan. Tobi secretly manipulated Nagato for years while acting as the shadow leader of Akatsuki. By kidnapping all the Tailed Beasts, Tobi planned to revive the Ten-Tails and put everyone in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, thereby ending all wars forever. This was actually Madara Uchiha’s plan, executed by Tobi, who was actually Obito. Obito used Madara’s name after Madara’s death.
Madara wanted Nagato to revive him in the final stage of the plan. However, Obito had no such plan because he wanted Nagato to revive him if anything happened to him. But, Nagato betrayed him and used the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive all the Konoha villagers.
After Itachi’s death, Tobi actively participated in Akatsuki missions and revealed his real identity to Kisame. He made Sasuke and his team, Taka, join Akatsuki to fill the positions of the dead Akatsuki members.
When Nagato captures the Nine Tails, Tobi sends Team Taka to capture the Eight Tails, but the Akatsuki discovers that the Eight Tails Jinchuriki escaped by tricking Team Taka.
Zetsu reported Nagato’s death to Tobi, who was shocked by Nagato’s betrayal. All the shinobi nations planned to stop Akatsuki after the attacks on Konoha and Killer Bee by Akatsuki. In response, Tobi had to make a significant decision. He sent Kisame to capture Killer Bee and instructed Taka to attack the Five Kage Summit, expecting Sasuke to fight against the Five Kages. However, Sasuke lost, and Tobi saved him. Tobi then revealed his Eye of the Moon Plan to the Five Kages and demanded the Eight and Nine Tails. When the Five Kages refused, Tobi declared the Fourth Shinobi World War.
While preparing for the war, Kabuto Yakushi offered his help to Tobi. He revived all dead Akatsuki members using the Impure World Reincarnation. Although Tobi initially refused, Kabuto blackmailed him by summoning the real Madara, whose name Tobi had been using. Tobi agreed and went to the Rain Village to get Nagato’s Rinnegan, killing Konan in the process. Kisame’s death news reached Tobi, but before dying, Kisame sent intel to Tobi , which Kabuto uses to strengthen the White Zetsu Army.
The war begins between Akatsuki and the Allied Shinobi Forces, causing many deaths. Naruto and Killer Bee are still not captured. After all White Zetsu’s death and the end of the Impure World Reincarnation, Tobi had no choice but to prematurely revive the Ten-Tails. Madara freed himself from Kabuto’s control and helped Tobi. Tobi became the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. However, Naruto, Sasuke, and their friends extracted all the Tailed Beasts from Tobi and defeated him.
Tobi accepted defeat and, after listening to Naruto and Kakashi, tried to correct his mistakes by using the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive all the shinobi who died in the war. However, Black Zetsu stopped him and manipulated him into reviving Madara Uchiha instead. Madara’s plans faced a setback because, after his revival, his Rinnegan turned to ashes since one of the two real Rinnegan was with Tobi, and the other was hidden. However, White Zetsu brought the hidden Rinnegan, allowing Madara to become the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki and control all the Tailed Beasts. Madara then sealed the Ten-Tails inside himself.
After that, he fought Might Guy, who almost killed Madara with his Eight Gates Released Formation. Then he battled Naruto and Sasuke, who had acquired new powers from Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. Madara took his Rinnegan back from Obito and then activated his RinneSharingan to cast everyone into the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
However, Black Zetsu betrays him immediately afterward, as he wants to revive Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, revealing that Madara, Obito, and Akatsuki were merely pawns. Kaguya revives through Madara’s body. In the end, Team Seven and Obito, with a combined effort, manage to defeat Black Zetsu and Kaguya. In this process, Obito dies, and Madara also dies after the Ten-Tails is extracted from him, while Naruto and Sasuke free everyone from the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
After the defeat of Akatsuki in the Fourth Shinobi World War, some people still found Akatsuki’s methods attractive, like the Ryuha Armament Alliance and Gengo.
“We are just ordinary people driven to revenge in the name of justice. But if revenge is called justice, then that justice will only breed further revenge and trigger a vicious cycle of hatred.”
– Nagato (Pain)
Under Shin’s leadership:
Fifteen years after the end of the war, a test subject of Orochimaru named Shin, inspired by Itachi Uchiha, adopts the Uchiha name and wants to kill Sasuke to take revenge on Itachi. Shin also adopts the name Akatsuki, believing he will fulfill the mission of Akatsuki to bring peace. He creates many clones of himself to form a new Akatsuki. Shin encounters trouble when the Seventh Hokage learns about him and sends his close ones to stop him. Shin kidnaps Sasuke’s daughter, Sarada, but they end up kidnapping his wife instead. Subsequently, Shin is killed by his own clones, and they settle in an orphanage.
