Introduction
In my last Gojō vs. Sukuna blog, you guys gave me an amazing response, so naturally, Part 2 was bound to come. In today’s blog, we’ll dive into the ongoing story of Gojō vs. Sukuna in the manga, specifically focusing on chapters 230 and 231. Needless to say, there are spoilers ahead, so if you want to avoid them, now is the time to stop reading.
Mahoraga’s Adaptation: The Game-Changer
At the end of chapter 229, we saw Mahoraga entering the fight and beginning to adapt to Unlimited Void. But in chapter 230, things become much clearer. First of all, we learn that Gojō is aware of Mahoraga’s abilities. Interestingly, during this entire domain battle, Sukuna never took on the full burden of Unlimited Void himself.
In fact, Mahoraga didn’t bear this burden either. So, we’re left wondering who exactly Unlimited Void affected. It didn’t hit Sukuna completely, as he’s standing safe and sound. Here, we learn that Unlimited Void was actually targeting the soul of Megumi, who is currently being possessed by Sukuna. This reveals that Sukuna is literally cheating in this fight. He’s evil after all, so of course, he’s going to cheat.
Sukuna’s Counter to Unlimited Void
After this, Sukuna sends Mahoraga back into the shadows and asks Gojo if he wants to say something. Gojo just laughs and says, “I’m just glad you’re fighting so hard.” Then, we’re told how Sukuna wanted to counter or neutralize Gojo’s Unlimited Void from the beginning. Obviously, Sukuna is also scared of Gojo’s Unlimited Void, which is why he used the Ten Shadows technique instead of Amplification, so that Unlimited Void could hit Megumi’s soul. Now, as a result of this, Sukuna was not able to use his innate techniques, but he was saved from Unlimited Void. So, it’s a win-win situation for Sukuna.
Now, after knowing all this, Gojo says, “Don’t be under the delusion that Megumi’s soul or you, Sukuna, have adapted to my Unlimited Void. No, no, I will open the domain again, and this time, I will target you.” And then you’ll have to bring Mahoraga out. Saying this, Gojo goes to perform domain expansion, but here Sukuna says with a smile, “You won’t be able to open your domain.”
We see that as soon as Gojo attempts to do domain expansion, his nose starts bleeding, which means he was unable to open his domain. Here, Sukuna says that cursed energy is engraved in the right prefrontal cortex of our brain, and during this fight, Gojo has used the reverse curse technique so many times and healed his burnt-out innate domain, that for now, he has reached his limits.
“In the end, strength alone conquers all.”
– Gojo Satoru
The Battle of Attrition: Gojo vs. Sukuna
Basically, Gojō was pushing his brain to its limits by repeatedly damaging it with cursed energy and then healing it with the reverse cursed technique. The problem is that the brain, when it comes to curse techniques, is like a black box—making it difficult to heal properly in such situations. Gojō had performed Domain Expansion five times so far, and opening another one would mean inviting his own death.
Sukuna also warns that if Gojō attempts to open his domain again, either he will die, or his domain will be so weak that it won’t be able to withstand attacks. This warning proves true, as we see Gojō collapse to his knees.
Sukuna was about to open his domain again, and this time he planned to include a barrier, ensuring that Gojō couldn’t escape. This meant that if Sukuna’s domain opened successfully, he would severely beat Gojō and, with the help of the Dharma Wheel, adapt to Infinity. In Sukuna’s mind, Gojō’s end was near, which is likely why he mocked Gojō by calling him mediocre. Sukuna then performed his Domain Expansion, but to everyone’s shock, his Malevolent Shrine couldn’t hold up—it shattered! Blood began pouring from Sukuna’s nose and eyes.
Sukuna’s Brain Damage and Gojo’s Advantage
This happened because, although Megumi’s soul was targeted by Unlimited Void, Sukuna was also trapped in it for about 10 seconds. Those 10 seconds were enough for Gojō to damage Sukuna’s brain so severely that he couldn’t perform Domain Expansion anymore. This means that both Gojō and Sukuna’s brains are now damaged, preventing them from using Domain Expansion. Gojō laughs and says, ‘My students are watching; I need to look cool.’ After this, Gojō punches Sukuna, and we all know that when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, Gojō is OP.
Sukuna’s Next Move: Adapting to Infinity
At the end of chapter 230, we read just one line, and that was, “I am the one who will teach you about love.” This line is probably indicating that Sukuna received Yorozu’s gift, and it might be used later in this fight. It hasn’t happened yet, but it might happen later.
Whatever it is, one thing is clear from chapter 230, that Gojo is stronger than Sukuna. Literally, Sukuna is using fully unleashed Ten Shadows, and he will also use Yorozu’s gift later. This means this fight will be almost 1 vs. 3 at some point. It’s still 1 vs. 2, yet Gojo has the upper hand at this point, so we can say that Gojo is more powerful.
Chapter 231: Discussing Gojo’s Strength
Anyway, let’s move on to chapter 231, where we see Kinji Hakari, Yuta, Panda, and other characters discussing Gojō’s strength. During the conversation, they talk about whether they’ve ever taken a punch from Gojō. Hakari mentions that when Gojō punches, he infuses his punch with cursed energy and then uses Blue to create a suction effect, drawing in the surroundings and amplifying the force of the punch to an extraordinary level, making it incredibly powerful.
Yuta recalls that when he took a punch from Gojō, it was so intense that he even vomited. It’s the absolute worst feeling to be on the receiving end of Gojō’s punch. All of this highlights that comparing yourself to Gojō is foolish—no one can ever reach his level. Gojō operates on a completely different plane, but it will be interesting to see what he does next in the fight.
So, the fight continued, with buildings being destroyed in the process—and who was getting beaten? Sukuna. Gojō, using Blue, gathered debris and attempted to crush Sukuna, but Sukuna managed to escape. As soon as Sukuna evaded, Gojō literally tried to stomp on Sukuna’s head, intending to crush him underfoot, but Sukuna escaped this as well. Gojō then created clones to confuse Sukuna, but Sukuna, being clever, identified the real Gojō, blocked his punch, and countered by beating and throwing Gojō.
From this fight, one thing became 100% clear: Gojō’s influence is powerful here. But then, the Dharma Wheel on Sukuna’s head turned once, causing confusion—had he fully adapted? We are then shown both Gojō’s and Sukuna’s perspectives. Gojō was thinking that whenever Sukuna used Domain Amplification to counter him, the Dharma Wheel turned black. The blackening of the Dharma Wheel indicated that Sukuna’s adaptability process had temporarily stopped.
Gojo vs. Mahoraga: The Countdown Begins
One more thing became clear: Domain Amplification is not a barrier technique. If it were, Sukuna’s brain wouldn’t have been damaged, preventing him from performing Domain Expansion. While Expansion is a barrier technique, Amplification is not. This was Gojō’s point of view, but Sukuna was thinking that Gojō was only using Lapse so that his other techniques wouldn’t be adapted. With these realizations, the fight resumed, and it became evident that Gojō was now at a disadvantage.
At this point, we’re told something very important, which I had already suspected. We know that Gojō’s Unlimited Void has been used five times, and it seems that for Mahoraga to fully adapt to an attack, the Dharma Wheel might need to rotate multiple times. This suggests that if the attack is weak, it can be adapted to quickly, but Gojō’s attacks are anything but weak—they are incredibly strong. So, the Dharma Wheel must rotate several times to fully adapt. Gojō realizes this and says, ‘Maybe to adapt to my Infinity, your Wheel needs to rotate four times. It has already rotated once, which means if it rotates three more times, then my Infinity will be useless because, after four rotations, Mahoraga will have fully adapted to it.’
Gojo’s Confidence: The Final Countdown
Gojō then tells Sukuna with a laugh that his Wheel needs to rotate three more times, and that there’s still plenty of time—’I’ll finish you before that happens.’ This confidence from Gojō-sensei is truly admirable. Essentially, the countdown begins here: before the Wheel spins three more times, Gojō must defeat Sukuna.
If he doesn’t, Mahoraga will adapt to Infinity and join the fight, turning the battle into a 1v2 situation—bad news for Gojō. If Mahoraga enters the fray, Gojō will be in serious trouble, which means he has very little time left and must fight with everything he’s got.
“No matter how many allies or weapons you have, if your strength fails you, it’s all pointless.”
– Megumi Fushiguro
