Introduction
So, the blog was a bit delayed, and I can imagine some of you were eagerly waiting! Where is ‘Gojo vs. Sukuna’? Well, it’s finally here! The blog is ready. In today’s post, we’re diving into the epic battle between Gojo and Sukuna in the manga. I’ll be covering the full fight in four parts, so consider this Part One. A quick heads-up: this blog is packed with spoilers, so if you want to avoid them, it’s best to stop reading here—no complaints later!
Setting the Stage for the Battle
To understand the Gojo vs. Sukuna fight, there are a few things you need to know. For instance, during the Shibuya Incident, Pseudo Geto, with the help of his disciples, planned so well that they managed to trap Gojo in a prison realm. Gojo was released in chapter 221. For reference, let me tell you that the chapter where he got trapped was around chapter 91. Meanwhile, by the end of the Culling Game, Sukuna had already left Itadori’s body and possessed Megumi’s body. I’ve always said that Sukuna is very interested in Megumi, especially in his Ten Shadows Technique.
The Ten Shadows Technique: A Key Element
Now you may ask, ‘What’s so special about the Ten Shadows Technique?’ The special thing is called Mahoraga. Not clear? No worries, I’ll explain it in another blog. For now, just understand that in the past, the leader of the Gojo clan, who possessed six eyes, and the leader of the Zenin clan, who had the Ten Shadows Technique, were rivals, and they both died in the conflict.
The takeaway is that the Ten Shadows Technique is a big deal; don’t take it lightly, especially Mahoraga. Don’t take Mahoraga lightly at all. Another thing is that before the fight, Sukuna had already consumed 19 fingers, which means we can say that he is at his full potential. So now that you know the basics, the foundation is laid, what are we waiting for? Let’s start Gojo vs. Sukuna!
The Start of the Battle: The Calm Before the Storm
It’s going to be fun, right? Now, let’s get to the real point. Look, after coming out of the Prison Realm, Gojo and Sukuna face each other, and they both agree not to fight today. They decide to meet on December 24th, freshly bathed, and then start the fight. The entire Jujutsu society was ready to witness this fight on December 24th. Literally, this fight was being live-broadcasted. The demand for this fight was so high that just from pay-per-view, five billion yen was made. Five billion yen is like 35 million USD. Now that was just from pay-per-view; imagine how much money must have been bet legally and illegally.
Now, before the fight starts, Gojo asks Kiyotaka Ijichi to create a barrier, and Kiyotaka Ijichi says, ‘I’m not that great at barriers; there are better people for this job. So why me?’ Gojo says, ‘I trust you.’
The Battle Begins: Gojo’s Hollow Purple
Gojo and Sukuna face each other, and Gojo starts with his Hollow Purple attack. This attack was so massive that it tore through the buildings, and the sheer power of the attack was shown by how much destruction it caused. But Sukuna is Sukuna, no joke. Even though the building was torn apart, Sukuna wasn’t harmed at all.
The Clash of Words: Gojo vs. Sukuna
Sukuna was ready, and he told Gojo, ‘You’re like a fish, no matter how much you struggle, in the end, you will be caught.’ Gojo replied, ‘Even if you look like Megumi, don’t think I won’t beat you up. I will definitely beat you, especially someone like you.’ With this dialogue, the hand-to-hand combat begins, and in this fight, Gojo was giving Sukuna a hard time. The hand-to-hand combat was so intense that the entire city area was being destroyed.
“The strongest doesn’t always win the fight, but they always make it a memorable one.”
– Gojo Satoru
The Power of Domain Amplification
Now you may ask, ‘Doesn’t Gojo have Limitless? How can Sukuna hit him? How is hand-to-hand combat possible?’ It’s happening with the help of Domain Amplification. It’s explained that Domain Amplification is basically like Simple Domain, just more refined and developed. With it, a person cannot use their innate techniques, but the opponent’s cursed techniques are nullified. In simple terms, Domain Amplification can nullify Gojo’s Limitless, but Sukuna won’t be able to use his innate techniques either, meaning that up to this point, Sukuna was fighting without using his innate techniques.
Many people were watching this fight on their monitors, and they all had one question: ‘When will this hand-to-hand combat end? We want to see Domain Expansion because the real fight is in the domains.’ Now that we’re talking about Domain Expansion, let me remind you that Sukuna’s Domain Expansion is called Malevolent Shrine, while Gojo’s Domain Expansion is Unlimited Void. In a fully formed domain, your attacks are sure to hit, which can be deadly for the opponent. Usually, when you create a domain, there’s a barrier, right? But Sukuna’s domain has no barrier. Yes, it’s like storing water without a bottle, painting without a canvas, running software without hardware, and reading this blog without sharing it. Its impossible right? but sukuna can. Because he is the king of the curses, he can do anything.
People were discussing how Gojō uses his Six Eyes to efficiently manage his cursed energy, ensuring his reserves never run out. Hearing this, Yuta says, ‘I have more cursed energy than Gojō-sensei, and Sukuna has more than twice as much as I do, so don’t even worry about their cursed energy running out.’ It’s not going to happen; they’ll keep fighting for a long time. People were watching the fight intensely, and then an interesting point comes up where both of them simultaneously perform Domain Expansion.
The Domain Clash: Unlimited Void vs. Malevolent Shrine
Now, count how many times Domain Expansion happens in total and write it in the comments section at the end of the blog because it’s going to be a lot. Since both had opened their domains, the ‘sure hit’ effect was canceled out. The only thing left to watch was whose domain would hold up because as soon as one domain breaks, the sure hits from the other will start landing, and the one whose domain breaks will get overwhelmed.
Since Sukuna’s domain range was larger than Gojō’s, naturally, pressure was exerted on Gojō’s domain from the outside. And what happened as a result? Boom! Gojō’s domain shattered. As soon as that happened, Sukuna started slashing Gojō with his technique, and Gojō somehow managed to use his reverse cursed technique to heal himself. Let me tell you, when your domain breaks, you can’t use your innate techniques for a while, meaning Gojō basically can’t even run away from Sukuna’s domain.
People often say, ‘If there’s no barrier in Sukuna’s domain, why not just run out of it?’ The answer is, you can’t run out because you can’t use your innate techniques, and Sukuna’s speed is too overwhelming. It’s almost impossible unless you have your innate techniques, which Gojō doesn’t right now. Taking advantage of all this, Sukuna kept beating Gojō, but the surprising thing was that Gojō kept fighting back and kept healing himself with his reverse cursed technique. What Gojō was doing would be unthinkable for a normal sorcerer, but Gojō was doing it.
Gojo’s Counterattack: Simple Domain and Reversal Red
Sukuna was getting the upper hand, but then Gojo casts his Simple Domain, which helped him survive Sukuna’s attacks for a while. For those who don’t know, let me explain that there are very limited ways to survive Domain Expansion: you can perform your own Domain Expansion, canceling out the ‘sure hit’ effect, and then it’s a matter of whose domain holds up. But let me tell you, creating a domain is not easy; not everyone can do it.
The second way is to cast a Simple Domain to create an area where you can survive for a while, but this will only help you heal; you won’t be able to do much. You can counter the domain for a short time. The third way, which we’ve also seen in the manga, is called the Hollow Wicker Basket. There might be another way, which you’ll find out later in this blog. We’ll talk about all of this in another blog. For now, just know that Gojo’s Simple Domain could only aid him for a short time. But after that, what would happen? How would Gojo survive Sukuna?
Everyone notices that inside his Simple Domain, Gojo was no longer healing himself with his reverse cursed technique. So why was that happening? Does that mean Gojo’s cursed energy is running out because he’s been using so many things like Domain Expansion, Reverse Techniques, and everything else? Has the time come when Gojo’s cursed energy is truly running out? An even bigger question: is Gojo going to lose this fight? Absolutely not, because ‘Through Heaven on Earth, Gojo alone is the chosen one’. Suddenly Gojo gets on Sukuna’s lap and then he hits Sukuna hard with his reversal red. Sukuna is injured by this attack, his shrine breaks, and Gojō is back in the game.
Gojo’s Strategy: Healing His Cursed Technique
But you might ask, the domain just broke, so how did he use his Reversal Red? Well, Gojō was doing something no one had ever thought of—he wasn’t just healing himself with his reversed curse technique; he was healing his cursed technique itself. Yes, with this, his innate techniques returned quickly, allowing him to escape from Sukuna’s domain range.
Meanwhile, Sukuna starts expanding his domain again, and at the same time, Gojō performs another Domain Expansion. This time, while creating his domain, Unlimited Void, Gojō used his intelligence to his advantage. Basically, a domain is as strong on the inside as it is weak on the outside. So, Gojō used his intelligence to strengthen the exterior of his domain, making it strong both inside and out.
The last time, his domain was broken from the outside, but this strategy ensured that Gojō’s domain held up well this time. With both domains cast again, the hand-to-hand combat resumed.
The Final Exchange: Gojo’s Domain Shatters Again
In this hand-to-hand combat, Gojo noticed that Sukuna was using Domain Amplification along with Domain Expansion, which allowed him to hit Gojo. This is a big deal. Gojo’s Unlimited Void can hit anyone, so Sukuna sticks to Gojo like glue to avoid being hit by Unlimited Void. And We know that whoever touches Gojō is not affected by Unlimited Void.
Sukuna then focuses his effective range to boost his power and eventually flips the conditions of his domain, just like Gojō did, causing Gojō’s domain to shatter once again. As soon as Gojō’s domain broke, he started getting beaten up again, as expected. At this point, Gojō says, ‘Now I’m going to use a technique that I learned as a child. I never thought I’d have to use it, but today, I will.'”
Introducing the Falling Blossom Emotion
Here we are introduced to the Falling Blossom Emotion, a secret art that has only been passed down in the three big families. Basically, it’s a kind of anti-domain technique, kind of like a cursed energy control program that blocks any attack that touches it. It won’t work against complicated domains like Unlimited Void, but considering Sukuna’s domain, which is mostly about slashing attacks, which are fairly normal attacks, it might just work.
The attacks are normal but powerful, but they can be countered by this. Gojo just needed a bit of time to stabilize himself and jump back into the fight. Gojo gets a little time to heal himself, and then he performs another Domain Expansion.
Gojo’s Tiny Domain: A New Strategy
Everyone expected that this time, Gojō would create a domain larger than Sukuna’s to break through Sukuna’s domain. However, the larger the domain, the less effective it becomes, meaning the ‘sure hit’ effect starts to diminish. But while we all think in one way, Gojō is on a different level; he thinks differently. This time, he creates a very tiny domain, literally smaller than a basketball. You might ask, ‘How can anyone get hit inside such a small domain?’ Let me explain: the external size of a domain doesn’t necessarily match its internal size. For example, remember the Prison Realm where Gojō was trapped for 19 or 20 days? That was also a small cube, yet Gojō was stuck inside it.
Sukuna then compresses his domain as well to counter Gojō’s small yet powerful domain, boosting its effectiveness. Sukuna finally starts cracking Gojō’s domain with his slashes and eventually breaks it. Everyone thought Gojō was done for this time, but then we see that Sukuna’s beautiful Malevolent Shrine domain also shatters. How did that happen? To maintain a domain, the user must be in good health. But during the time when Sukuna was breaking Gojō’s domain, Gojō had beaten Sukuna so severely that Sukuna became too weak to maintain his domain. So now, with both domains broken and neither of them able to use their cursed techniques, what happens next? The hand-to-hand combat begins again.”
Gojo’s Upper Hand in Hand-to-Hand Combat
In hand-to-hand combat, Gojo always had the upper hand. Now, you might say, ‘But Gojō knows how to heal with his cursed techniques, so shouldn’t he quickly heal and recast his domain?’ Well, this is Sukuna we’re talking about—he didn’t originally know how to do this. But after observing Gojō, he immediately learned it and started healing his cursed technique as well. Gojo once thought, ‘Alright, I’m fighting Sukuna; everything is fine, but why isn’t he using Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique? I mean, since the start of the series, we’ve seen how interested Sukuna was in it. He put in so much effort to acquire Megumi’s technique, and now during the fight, he isn’t even using it, especially Mahoraga. Why isn’t he using it? It’s the trump card; it could turn the entire fight around.’ You’ll find out when he uses it later.
After this, both heal themselves again, perform Domain Expansion, and once again, Gojo strategizes and thinks, ‘I’ll keep hitting Sukuna so much that even if my domain breaks, Sukuna won’t be able to maintain his domain either.’ And that’s exactly what happens. This time, Sukuna was severely injured, meaning Gojo had given him a brutal beating; half of his face was gone. This makes it clear to us viewers that even though Sukuna’s domain is unique, when it comes to hand-to-hand combat inside a domain, Gojo has the upper hand.
The Crucial 0.01-Second Advantage
Now they both start healing themselves again, preparing to recast their domains. But this time, Yuta points out that Gojō was 0.01 seconds faster in opening his domain. This happened because Sukuna needed more time to heal himself, as he was severely injured, so it took him longer to restore himself with his innate techniques, giving Gojō a 0.01-second advantage.
Now, even though 0.01 seconds seems like a tiny amount of time, it’s a significant factor in a fight between Sukuna and Gojō. The result? Sukuna gets hit by Unlimited Void. This time, Gojō had the upper hand, and the domain battle lasted for 2 minutes and 40 seconds, after which Sukuna’s domain shattered while Gojō’s domain held up. This means Sukuna got hit by Unlimited Void, and at this point, everyone thought Gojō had finally won the fight. Gojō advanced to deliver the killing blow, but Sukuna pulls out his trump card—Mahoraga.
Sukuna’s Trump Card: The Arrival of Mahoraga
The Divine General Mahoraga makes his entry into the fight. Gojō thinks, ‘Let’s finish this in one hit,’ but Mahoraga had already adapted to Unlimited Void, meaning Gojō now had to face Mahoraga, who had adapted to his most powerful technique. Imagine how tough this would be for Gojō. Plus, this gives Sukuna time to heal, stand back up, and re-energize for the fight. So, who will win this battle moving forward?
“In the end, it’s not about who’s stronger; it’s about who can win in the end.”
– Megumi Fushiguro
