Introduction
For those who have been keeping up with the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, you’ll remember the intense fight between Sukuna and Maki. If you’re not up to date, consider this your spoiler alert! During their clash, Maki wielded the Split Soul Katana—a weapon so powerful it was able to injure Sukuna’s very soul. This moment got me thinking about the many cursed tools that exist in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe and their unique powers.
To explore this topic thoroughly, I’ve decided to divide this discussion into two parts. This is Part 1, where we’ll take a deep dive into some of the most notable cursed tools we’ve encountered so far in the series, exploring their abilities and how they’ve shaped battles. If I happen to miss any cursed tool, please forgive me—and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
The Black Rope: A Powerful but Fragile Cursed Tool
Let’s start with the Black Rope from Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which we saw Miguel using against Gojo-sensei. It’s a rope that can disrupt or cancel an opponent’s cursed techniques. Do you understand how powerful this rope is? It can penetrate Gojo’s Infinity! This rope was woven by sorcerers from Miguel’s clan in Africa, and according to sources, it took decades to weave.
I mean, not just one decade, but several decades! However, there’s a big downside to this rope, which is that the more you use it, the more it burns away. So, if you use it too much, there won’t be any rope left—it will all burn away. After the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, it’s likely that Gojo destroyed this rope because when Yuta went to search for it in Africa, he didn’t find it. This means it probably doesn’t exist anymore.
Infinity protects me, but even I must respect a cursed tool that can cut through it. The right tool in the wrong hands is dangerous.
– Gojo Satoru
Slaughter Demon and Other Basic Blades
Moving on, the next cursed tool on our list is the Slaughter Demon. Although the name of this cursed tool sounds very dangerous, its function is actually quite basic. It’s essentially a knife or blade infused with cursed energy, which means it can kill cursed spirits, and both sorcerers and non-sorcerers can use it.
We primarily saw Yuji using the Slaughter Demon, and when he used it against the Finger Bearer in Season 1, it broke. Now, you might ask, how did Yuji get this tool? Well, Gojo gave it to him after receiving it from Maki. Speaking of blades, we can’t forget Miwa’s katana, which was also infused with cursed energy. If you remember, Miwa used this katana to perform her Batou Sword Drawing technique, the fastest sword-drawing technique.
Yuta’s Katana: A Case of Cursed Energy Infusion
Apart from Miwa, Yuta also has his own katana, but there’s some doubt here because I’m not sure if Yuta’s katana originally had cursed energy or not. I mean, we all know that Yuta infuses his katana with his cursed energy to make it overpowered and attack with it.
That’s why Yuta’s domain expansion is filled with thousands of katanas, each containing a copy of his technique, and Yuta can only use each sword once in his domain. This could also be considered a cursed tool, but I wouldn’t classify it as a very overpowered cursed tool since its power depends solely on Yuta’s cursed energy and his infusion of it.
Megumi’s Dual Blade: A Case of Lost Potential
Was there any other blade that wasn’t very useful? Oh yes, Megumi had a dual blade, where one of the blades was broken, and the other was lost. So, if you want to include that in the list of cursed tools, go ahead. These are all dangerous blades, but they’re still basic. Yes, they can kill cursed spirits if cursed energy is infused into them or by the wielder’s cursed energy, but it all depends on how powerful the sorcerer wielding the blade is.
Nanami’s 7:3 Ratio Blade: More Than Meets the Eye
A blade that’s better than all these is Nanami’s blade. Yes, the same black and white patched blade that Nanami used for his 7:3 ratio attack on his opponents. Initially, I thought Nanami’s blade wasn’t anything special, and that it was Nanami’s ratio technique that made the blade so overpowered.
But in the recent JJK Chapter 253, we saw Kusakabe using this blade to perform the ratio technique on Sukuna, meaning we can say that the ratio technique is inherent in this blade. Now, whether this happened due to some binding vow from Nanami or some other reason, we don’t know. But as of now, we can say that this blade is at least Grade 1 level, meaning it’s quite an overpowered blade, isn’t it?
Haruta’s Hand Sword: Unique but Ineffective
By the way, there’s another blade that’s not overpowered but very different, and that’s Haruta’s Hand Sword. This sword literally has a hand at the other end, which Haruta holds. This hand on the sword helps it move on its own, and even if Haruta throws it at someone, the sword will walk back to him. In fact, the sword follows all of Haruta’s commands—it will even punch someone if Haruta tells it to.
Yes, this sword has all these artistic features, but in terms of power, the sword is useless because when Haruta attacked Nanami with it, Nanami didn’t even get a scratch. And after that, Nanami grabbed Haruta by the ponytail and gave him a good beating—remember that?
Maki’s Arsenal: A Heavenly Restricted Sorcerer’s Tools
Since we’re talking about swords, Maki also wielded several cursed swords, so let’s talk about them too. And Maki is Heavenly Restricted, so who else would use more cursed tools than her? Toji could, because he was also Heavenly Restricted. So, let’s discuss some of Maki’s cursed tools. The first one is her glasses.
Yes, even her glasses are a cursed tool. You might ask how? Well, with the help of these glasses, Maki can see cursed spirits. It’s another matter that Maki doesn’t need these glasses in the manga anymore because, after exterminating the Zenin clan and Mai’s death, Maki’s cursed energy, which was very little, has now completely disappeared—literally zero cursed energy, just like Toji. And when this happens, that person becomes Heavenly Restricted, and in that case, they can see cursed spirits. Maki couldn’t see them before because she had cursed energy, but it was so little that it was meaningless. But now, she’s literally Lady Toji.
The Polearm and Playful Cloud: Maki’s Mainstays
But let’s not talk about Maki right now; I’ll explain her more thoroughly in another blog. We’re focusing on the cursed tool from Season 1 that Maki used the most, and that was the Polearm—a pole-like stick with a blade at the end. This tool broke several times, and Maki repaired it many times, just like her glasses. This tool isn’t anything special, but there’s a cursed tool that’s very special, and that’s Playful Cloud.
Playful Cloud is a weapon with three staffs connected by rings, similar to nunchaku, and it can cause havoc. I know you might be thinking that any cursed tool can cause havoc in the hands of a powerful person. But no, that’s not the case. Suppose I’m very powerful, like a special grade, and I get Haruta’s sword—if I use that sword to attack a special grade, the sword will break. But Playful Cloud becomes stronger in the hands of a stronger opponent. You can literally defeat a special grade cursed spirit with it without any problem. That’s why Toji used it first, then Geto used it, Maki also used it, and then the reincarnated Toji used it as well.
The Inverted Spear of Heaven: Toji’s Game-Changing Tool
You saw in Season 2 when Toji entered Dagon’s domain—he had Playful Cloud in his hands. He sharpened it from the end and killed Dagon, a special grade, with it. So yes, in the right hands, this cursed tool is very overpowered, but in the hands of someone like us, it wouldn’t even kill an ant.
Now that we’ve mentioned Toji, how can we forget the cursed tool that Toji used to literally kill Gojo? I mean, for a few seconds, Gojo was gone. This tool was the Inverted Spear of Heaven. Yes, my friends, this weird-looking blade is a special grade cursed tool with a very overpowered cursed technique. Its power is that whenever it comes into contact with a cursed technique, it nullifies that cursed technique. That’s why Toji used it to pierce Gojo because, of course, he could cut through Gojo’s Infinity with it.
Then, when Gojo came back enlightened, Toji used a chain to connect this cursed tool for long-range attacks on Gojo. In fact, when Gojo attacked Toji with his Red technique, Toji used this cursed tool to block the Red attack, and the tool remained intact. You can see how strong this tool is. At the end of this fight, Toji was killed, but still, the point is that the Inverted Spear of Heaven is overpowered, whether you believe it or not.
If you still don’t believe me, let me tell you one more thing. When Tengen-sama, who is currently undergoing a merger, talked about the Inverted Spear of Heaven in the manga, he mentioned that it could be used to open the Prison Realm, meaning Gojo could easily be freed from the Prison Realm using it. But it’s another matter that after the Toji vs. Gojo fight, Gojo either destroyed this tool or hid it in a place where no one could find it. You know, Gojo-sensei is very cautious.
Chain of a Thousand Miles: A Strategic Extension
In this Toji vs. Gojo fight, we also saw another special grade cursed tool, the Chain of a Thousand Miles. This is a chain whose length can be extended as long as its other end remains invisible. That’s why Toji used this chain to connect the Inverted Spear of Heaven and attack Gojo from long range.
The other end of the chain was invisible because Toji’s worm-like cursed spirit was holding it in its mouth. So yes, this chain could extend as much as needed at that point. However, the chain’s durability isn’t great because it broke from Gojo’s Purple technique, as we saw in that fight.
A weapon is only as strong as its wielder. But a cursed tool? It carries its own curse and strength. Master it, and you master the fight.
